History of Lee County and Lehigh Acres Lee County is a county located in the U.S. state
of Florida. The county makes up the entirety of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the most
populous county in Southwest Florida. Lehigh is a town in Lee County, The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the town's population as
1,818 on 1 July 2006. It has approximately 804 square miles of land, 237 square miles of inland water areas, 172 square miles of
coastal/territorial water.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2000, the population of Lee County was 440,888. The population estimate for April 1,
2007 was 615,728, reflecting a 35 percent growth over 7 years. Lehigh Acres is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lee County,
Florida. The US Census Bureau estimates the CDP's population at 67,867 as of 2006.The community is a rapidly growing, expansive,
pre-platted subdivision of approximately 61,000 acres.
Lee County was created in 1887 from Monroe County. It was named for Robert E. Lee, Confederate general in the American Civil War.
Incorporated in 1886, Fort Myers is the center of a popular tourist area in Southwest Florida and the seat of Lee County. It is
located about 120 miles south of Tampa at the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caloosahatchee River. Fort Myers was the
frequent winter home of Thomas Edison, as well as Henry Ford. Lee County has been the host to several Major League Baseball teams
for Spring Training, over the past several decades. Currently, it is the spring home of the Boston Red Sox, as well as the
Minnesota Twins.
Fort Myers, built in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians that were massacring the area’s few settlers, was named
after Col. Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed in Florida for seven years and was the son-in-law of the fort’s establisher and
commander. In 1858, after years of elusive battle, chief Billy Bowlegs and his warriors were persuaded to surrender and move west,
and the fort was abandoned. Billy’s Creek, which flows into the Caloosahatchee River and runs between The Beau Rivage Condominiums
and Alta Mar, was named after a temporary camp where Billy Bowlegs and his men awaited ships to take them west.
The fort was abandoned until 1863 when a small number of Federal troops re-occupied the fort during the Civil War. In 1865 the fort
was attacked unsuccessfully by a very small group of Confederates. After the war, the fort was again deserted.
Fort Myers first became a nationally known winter resort with the building of The Royal Palm Hotel in 1898. But what really sparked
the city’s growth was the construction of the Tamiami Trail Bridge built across the Caloosahatchee River in 1924. After the
bridge’s construction, the city experienced its first real estate boom and many subdivisions sprouted around the city.
In 1923, Collier and Hendry Counties were created by splitting these areas from Lee County. As recently as 2004, discussion had
taken place surrounding the possibility of the city of Cape Coral becoming its own county, citing in particular a perceived lack of
infrastructure support from the Lee County government. However a new county has not as of yet been created.
Lehigh Acres got its start in the mid 1950s when Chicago businessman Lee Ratner needed a tax shelter. He had sold his pest control
business, and he faced the possibility of losing most of his earnings to the high capital gains tax of that era. Ratner heard that
cattle was a good investment for people in his predicament, and he bought 18,000 acresof land in eastern Lee County and named it
the Lucky Lee Ranch. After ranching for a while, and despite having no prior development experience, Ratner joined with Gerald H.
Gould, a Florida advertising executive, Manuel Riskin, a Chicago CPA, and Edward Shapiro, a former Chicagoan who was in the real
estate business in California, and began land sales at Lehigh Acres.
Since the days of Lucky Lee, the boundaries of Lehigh Acres have stretched to cover 61,000 acres and the pasture land where
Ratner's cattle roamed has been divided into some 152,000 quarter acre and half-acre lots for housing, along over a thousand miles
of roads. Strips of land along major thoroughfares, such as Homestead Road And Lee Boulevard, were set aside for commerce.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,212 square miles, of which, 804 square miles of it is land
and 408 square miles of it (33.69%) is water.
Lee County is located on the southwest coast of Florida. It is approximately 125 miles south of Tampa and 115 miles west of Fort
Lauderdale via Interstate 75; and approximately 125 miles west-northwest of Miami via U.S. Highway 41.
Lee County Beaches Lee County is known for it's beaches, abundant waterways, and shelling, some
of the best beach in Florida are in Lee County, including:
Upper Captiva Island, Also known as North Captiva Island on Nautical Charts, Upper Captiva is bordered by Pine Island Sound
on one side and the waters and beached of the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Upper Captiva is quaintly sized at just over 700 acres
with two thirds of the island set aside for a Wildlife Sanctuary. Upper Captiva Island is approximately four and a half miles long
and a half a mile wide at its widest points. From the mangrove lined waters of the Bay to the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico,
half a mile seems just right. North Captiva becomes a narrow sliver of sandy beaches, rustic beach verandahs, and majestic stilt
homes in comparison with the great waters of the Bay and Gulf that surround our tiny tropical island.
Sanibel is famous all over the world for the fabulous shelling on its beaches. The island's location in the Gulf of Mexico,
lying east to west, instead of the normal north to south, makes it a prime spot for shells to wash ashore. The island acts as a
scoop, catching numerous shells as the tides shift. There are 17 miles of beaches for shelling, swimming or basking in the warm
Florida sun. In the waters of Sanibel, you are likely to see dolphins, manatees, and numerous varieties of seashells including
starfish and sand dollars. The dolphins are so plentiful on the island, that many swimmers have reportedly swam along aside of the
dolphins. Adhering to the island's preservation principles, removal of live seashells, including living starfish and sand dollars,
are prohibited. The Sanibel Lighthouse is a popular attraction. Built in 1884, the 98-foot-tall lighthouse is the island's oldest
standing structure. The lighthouse sits on a popular beach spot, appropriately called "Lighthouse Beach" by the locals. The
lighthouse is surrounded by white sandy beaches, clear waters and a plethora of seashells. The lighthouse keeper's cottages are now
used by the J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve's employees. It is the last lighthouse to be seen while heading south, until you
reach the Dry Tortugas, 130 miles further south. In addition to the sun, beaches and wildlife, Sanibel's relaxed atmosphere is its
most admirable asset. The absence of stop lights, high-rises, neon signs, fast food restaurants or shopping malls gives the
tropical island an old time feeling that is hard to find in most areas. The speed limit rarely exceeds 30 miles per hour, and in
place of stop lights, the local policeman can be seen directing traffic to keep it moving along. The yesteryear feeling is perfect
for families looking for a relaxing vacation or for couples looking to spend quiet time together.
Fort Myers Beach
It’s hard to imagine Fort Myers Beach as a remote stretch of green edged with white, soft sand and accessible only by boat.
However, that's just what it was until the first “Little Bridge" was constructed to bring tourists and locals alike to the seven-
mile Estero Island through Bunche Beach on the mainland. By the late 1920s, a new bridge (actually a second-hand one from the East
coast of Florida) was installed near the current San Carlos Bridge. Little by little, Estero Island’s attractive features,
including miles and miles of white, sandy beaches, have captured the imaginations of visitors from near and far. This beach
community draws thousands of visitors from Germany, France and the United Kingdom each year. Boating, fishing and spectacular Lovers
Key State Park make this island a real recreational playground. Add to that a great number of family-friendly resorts, quaint
cottages, Old Florida charm, restaurants serving fresh seafood from the Gulf of Mexico and an annual Shrimp Festival, and it’s a
beach vacation paradise. Nightlife gleams along the northern tip of the island around shopping-and-dining destination Times Square,
and sunset watching is a favored pastime.
