Description
40 AcresBent County, Colorado
This beautiful 40 acre parcel is located in south east Colorado, 80 miles north of New Mexico and 40 miles east of the Colorado-Kansas border.
It provides a wonderful and relaxing atmosphere with lots of wildlife, mountain views, and is only a short drive from beautiful John Martin State Park which offers boating, water skiing, hiking, fishing, and camping.
Both John Martin Reservoir and nearby Lake Hasty provide excellent fishing for walleye, crappie, channel catfish, and both large and smallmouth bass.Lake Hasty is also stocked with rainbow and cutthroat trout each spring and fall. While you can go boating and use personal watercraft on John Martin Reservoir, only boats which are non-gas powered are permitted on Lake Hasty.
Area Attractions
This area has played an important part in American History and there are several Historical facilities and landmarks some of which are as follows:
The Santa Fe TrailExtends 780 miles from Westport (now Kansas City) to Santa Fe, New Mexico; where it connected with El Camino Real, which led deep into Mexico. Much of its course was a narrow beaten track where caravans of freight wagons followed only a general path over the tough plains grass. While the path was not without its dangers, descriptions of it being covered with blood were grossly exaggerated: Indians rarely attacked a well-organized caravan and only eight men died on the trail in it first ten years.
Pike’s PeakIn the summer of 1806, Captain Zebulon Pike led one of the first expeditions to explore the area. Starting in St. Louis, he set out to explore the new territory and mapped his travels along the Arkansas River. It was in Bent County near the confluence of the Purgatoire and Arkansas Rivers that he first sighted the peak, now known as Pike’s Peak, about 140 miles to the northwest.
Bent’s FortWas a creation of a trio of traders, Ceran St Vrain and both Charles and William Bent who had met in the winter of 1828. Construction began on Bent’s Fort by the end of 1828 and was first called William’s Fort. Business began declining in1848 and William Bent offered to sell the fort to the Army, but it declined, hoping to acquire it without cost. Well, the Army lost its gamble; William Bent blew up the Fort rather than give it to the Army for free.
William went on trading with the Indians, particularly with the Kiowa, Arapaho, Comanche, and Cheyenne. Business was so good that in 1852 he began building a new stone fort, east of the old one. In 1860 Bent leased the new fort to the Army. The Army built several temporary barracks around the outside walls of the stone fort and called it Fort Lyon, which is still operational today.Comanche National GrasslandWhen you encounter the Comanche National Grasslands, you’ll see surging tides of land that looks like a green and brown ocean frozen in mid-torrent. Highway 350 cuts directly through this grassland, and is also part of the Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway.
