Beautiful views of San Luis Mountain Range!
This beautiful building site is a pretty piece of land about five miles southwest of the town of San Luis as the crow flies. From the aerial phots and subdivision maps it looks like this piece of property sits right below Wild Horse Mesa on the valley floor. We have not had a chance to view the property but all of the photos below were taken to the south of another parcel that sits just below the mesa as well and they should be an excellent representation of what the property is like. I see on the a few of the maps there is an intermittent stream in the area and youwould need to visit the property to know for sure if it runs through it or not. That would be cool if it did!
The view of the mesa is very pretty and there was a new home that was being built on the side of the mesa. To the north are awesome views of Blanca Peak in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Across the valley to the east are the San Luis Mountains and very cool hills are sprinkled across the valley from the southwest to the northwest. There is a big hill to the south. On the other side of the mesa to the east is Sanchez Reservoir!
The graded roads in this area were in nice shape and the road in the pictures is a good representation of the roads we found in the bottom unit. The property sits about a mile west of the paved highway. It is also the dedicated easement. The bottom part of the valley is fairly flat with a very gentle roll to it. It looks from the aerial photos that this piece might actually maybe sit up just a bit higher but definitely is down at the bottom of the mesa. The area was covered in lots of tall sagebrush that had pretty fall colors! You would need to contact the local power company to know how close power runs. I think this would be a great spot for someone seeking a rural place to build a home or a retreat or a great investment in Colorado land! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
Subdivision Information:
The Wild Horse Mesa subdivision is located in Costilla County, nestled high in the Rocky Mountains in the Sangre de Cristo Range. It sits a couple of miles north of New Mexico/Colorado state line and world class skiing is less than an hour away in Taos! It just to the west of the Sanchez Reservoir where fisherman boast about some of the best fishing in the state with pike, walleye and yellow perch. The lake is a four mile long lake covering over 2000 acres when it is full. It is a quick drive to the small town of San Luis which has a population of about 800 people, a couple of restaurants and gas stations. The subdivision has a small church as well as a fire station in it. The area has wild horses, deer and elk roaming around. This is such a gorgeous subdivision!
To the east is Sanchez Reservoir and to the west is the beautiful San Luis Valley, one of the largest high desert valleys in the world at an altitude of over 7,000 feet. It is surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range to the east and the San Juan mountain range to the west. The Rio Grande River originates in the San Juan Mountains and flows through the San Luis Valley. Here you will also find Blanca Peak. At 14,345 feet it is the 4th highest peak in Colorado! It offers stunning views to this subdivision! I think this is an excellent place for someone seeking a beautiful place in Colorado to build a home or retreat!
Sanchez Reservoir with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as the backdrop!
A couple of homes in the subdivision. The second one is a new home being built on the edge of the mesa overlooking the San Luis Valley!
In September 2005 we caught early morning riders boarding the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Antonito. The ride takes you through the Conejos County high country, through two tunnels and along the Toltec Gorge offering scenic views of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges.
The nearby small town of San Luis. It boasts of being the oldest town in Colorado and is the county seat.
We startled these elk as we crossed the state line into New Mexico just to the south of this subdivision!
